From 1989 To 1999, BMW Entered The Personal Luxury Coupe Market Aiming At The Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe (Later Named CL-Class) With The 840Ci and 850Ci Line Up. The 840Ci Was Equipped With A 4.0 Liter Fuel Injected 8 Cylinder Engine Producing 286 Horsepower Mated To A 4 Speed Automatic In The States While Offering A 6 Speed Manual In European Models. Opting For The 850Ci Rewarded You With A 5.5 Liter 12 Cylinder Engine, Standard 6 Speed Manual, A Chart Topping Top Speed Of 186 MPH And Blistering 0-60 Times. The 850Ci Carried A Base Price Of 122,600. Due To High Price and Declining Sales, The 8-Series Was Killed Towards The End Of 1999. The Mercedes CL Is Still Produced To Date.
Today However, BMW Offers The 6-Series, Which Is Aimed At The Mercedes SL and Lexus SC. Is That Enough Though? I Think Not. Mercedes Is Dominating the Upper Luxury Coupe Market With Its CL550, CL600, CL63 and CL65 Cars, 2 Of Which Is Putting Out Over 500 Horsepower In V-12 Forms. There Is Obviously A Market For These Cars And More Than Enough Room For BMW To Slot Back In With A New V-12 Powered 860i Maybe? Hopefully They Get The Picture But As Of Now, If We Want V-12 Power In A 2 Door Form, Mercedes and Bentley Are Our Only Options...
